Cell Service Meeting Dec. 13, 2025 Summary

The Southold Peconic Civic Association (SPCA) held a meeting on Saturday, December 13, 2025 during which Director of Southold Town Zoning Department Heather Lanza shared Southold Town’s plans for increasing cell service coverage and how this impacts necessary changes to zoning laws. In addition, Tanya Negron from Elite Telecom Partners provided information about how cell towers are built and operate, and how cell service provider companies use such towers to provide service. Attendees were able to view results of the survey that went out to Southold residents this past summer and to ask questions of the presenters. You can view the meeting in full below. We expect Southold Town to have a public hearing about the necessary code changes this winter. The SPCA will publicize the date as soon as we know it. Once the changes are approved, installation of and modifications to towers can begin.

What’s going on with Southold Town’s wireless service initiative?

On Monday, October 6, 2025 we asked Supervisor Krupski for an update on the Town’s wireless service initiative. Here is what he told us:

The lack of cell service is being addressed in the following manner.  Last year the Board hired a company, Citiscape, who is not affiliated with any carrier, to analyze town-wide coverage.  I did outreach to neighboring municipalities about our intent and because some also engaged the same firm,  we received a reduced rate for this analysis.  Last month the company presented to the Board the findings and recommendations. The company also conducted a poll to engage the community about specifics in lack of coverage, etc.   They are drafting amendments to our wireless code, working with our Planning Department this week on language.  This draft code amendment will go to code committee for review, before a public hearing will be set.

This will change the old outdated code to reflect physics and function.  The towers must be the correct height and location to provide for service, which answers the call for public safety.

Please reference the Town’s Zoning Update online, to follow the progress being made.
